10/02/2012 – A few pointers to keep the frost from harming your plants…

If the weather should affect the British Isles, we hope it won’t bring the industry to a standstill and affect any planting schemes you have planned. There are certain things which can be done which will still enable you to carry on planting or even completely finish the planting scheme just as long as you are prepared.

Aim to do the large areas first, leaving the minor bits to last.Using materials like old carpet, fleece or hessian laid down to cover the ground before planting willhelp to keep out the worst of the frost.

Digging holes/trenches in advance, and filling them with straw can be well worth the effort or covering the pre-dug holes/trenches with sheet of ply.

Be aware of walking over grass in extreme frosts can kill the grass.

LOOKING AFTER STOCK BEFORE PLANTING

Avoid storing any delivered stock or stock awaiting planting in frost pockets

Keep roots bagged & moist at all times. Root balls should be kept moist. If storage will be for more than 2 days-

BAREROOT- Open the bags & water the roots. Re-tie the bags & cover the whole plant, but especially the roots with a tarpaulin reduce the risk of drying out & keep them out of wind & frost.

ROOTBALLS – cover RB with plastic or hessian to reduce the risk of drying out & keep the wind & frost from the roots.

EVERGREENS – cover any tops with fleece, tarpaulin or hessian to cut down on evaporation. Remove occasionally to give them light and air. They will still need watering, as evergreens are continually needing moisture.

06/02/2012 – Getting ready for Spring…

Well we always thought that winter would hit us at some point and to be honest we are happy as the very cold weather does a lot of good to the garden, keeping aphid numbers down at the very least.

We are looking good down here in Bampton with the tunnel offering a wide range of shrubs for this time of year. There is a herbaceous plant sale on last years stock so don’t miss out on that and out back the bare root hedging is moving fast. Make sure that you get bareroot stock in the ground by mid March at the latest!

23/12/2011 – Bampton Garden Plants will be closed until January 11th.
